Westminster is a city in Orange County, California, situated approximately 11 miles southwest of Anaheim and 9 miles west of Santa Ana. Founded in 1870 as a Presbyterian temperance colony by Reverend Lemuel P. Webber, Westminster derived its name from the Westminster Assembly of 1643, which laid out the fundamental principles of the Presbyterian faith. Early settlers in the area refused to grow grapes due to the association between grapes and alcohol, but by the end of the 19th century, grape cultivation was flourishing, and the Green Kat Tavern had become a town landmark. The city was incorporated in 1957, following a plan to form a municipality named Tri-City that would combine three cities: Westminster, Midway City, and Barber City. However, Midway City withdrew from the plan, and Barber City was absorbed into the western part of the newly incorporated city of Westminster.
